Comments on Tuesday's Referendum Vote
Here are comments on Tuesday’s successful referendum election from Meredie Scrivner, advisor to the Yes Yes Nov. 3 Committee, and Douglas Armstrong, committee chairman.
Scrivner:
A lot of well-deserved thank yous and accolades are filling the air this morning...what a good feeling. As my husband, Tom, and I think about the accomplishment of this victory, and as we think back to the referendum of 15 years ago, one thing stands out more than anything else: the power of people working together for the public good. Whitefish Bay is the community it is because time after time, people come together to make good things happen.
In this case, it is particularly gratifying that the election was won with truth, good information, courtesy, honest persuasion, smart people making the case to thoughtful voters, and good old-fashioned hard work. The fact that this effort grew new, young leaders is perhaps the best news of all.
For generations, Whitefish Bay has found a way to come together for the common good. I am confident this election has once again cemented that tradition. We are all very fortunate to live here.
Armstrong:
It’s wonderful savoring this remarkable victory the day after.
The close vote on Question 2 underscores just how valuable every contribution was to this support campaign. Everything that everybody did down to the smallest detail mattered. Can we ever adequately express our gratitude for that? A fine thing has been done here. I, for one, am extremely proud to be associated with it.
We have decided not to completely disband the terrific organization that gathered around this issue, however, since we think many of the supporters may want to follow the progress of the plan going forward through its refinements, blueprints, letting of bids, borrowing of money and construction. Steering Committee members of the organization will discuss a way to do this in the next couple of days and find a way to contact all 750 members of the organization with an option for staying in the loop.
In the meantime, thank you to all who participated and all who voted to make better schools in Whitefish Bay a reality.
