It was a first ever for the highly successful Greyhounds program when they won seven events and claimed the championship in the Woodland Conference Relays on Sept. 23.
"This was the first year (we won it) so this is a really good feeling for the seniors on the team," said coach Robby McCabe. "We won six of the 12 events and really closed out the meet well by medaling in the final five races and winning three of them."
Shorewood earned six firsts, one second and one third en route to a 310-point total, which far outdistanced Whitnall (272).
Earning the firsts were the 200-yard medley relay of Molly Hayes, Sonya Tomasiewicz, Abby Kohlenberg and Ellen Stello (two minutes, 2.47 seconds); the 400 individual medley of Clare Chamberlain, Diana Yakshimamedova, Hallie Sanders and Elli Sellinger (4:22.7); the 300 butterfly crew of Stello, Sellinger, Kohlenberg and Chamberlain (3:00.9); the 400 medley team of Chamberlain, Tomasiewicz, Stello and Hayes (4:16.88); the 300 backstroke team of Lexie Lanphere, Stello, Stern and Chamberlain (3:08.9); and the 100 freestyle unit of Tomasiewicz, Sellinger, Hayes and Sanders (50.28).
"This was just a great team effort," McCabe said.

The Blue Dukes took control of the North Shore Conference race with an emphatic 4-0 win over archrival Homestead on Sept. 22.
With the win, Bay improved to 4-1 in league play with just two games left to play. The Blue Dukes finished second in the Brookfield Central Invitational last weekend, beating Hudson, 1-0, before falling to the host Lancers, 4-3. They started the week at 7-4 overall.
They will challenge themselves by heading down to the Collinsville (Ill.) Invitational where they will play some nationally ranked squads.
"Our schedule is based more on quality than on quantity," said Blue Dukes coach Mike Kops.
Bay will then close out the North Shore season at 7 p.m. Oct. 6 at home against Milwaukee Lutheran .
In the win over Homestead (3-1-1, 5-6-2), thoughts of last year's crushing 3-2 loss to the Highlanders, where the Blue Dukes held a 2-0 halftime lead, weighed everyone down. So when Bay took a similar lead against the Highlanders on goals from Charlie Hoover and Sam Bischmann, Kops wanted no such letdown again.
"We needed that first goal of the second half," said Kops. Bay actually got two of them within three minutes of each other from Robert Courtney at the 54th and 57th minute; that fact proceeded to ease Kops' mind.
"I think we took advantage of an injury they had in the center-midfield area," Kops said. "The run of play came through there and with somebody like Charlie (all-state candidate Hoover) coming through there, a team isn't going to be able to stop us if they're less than 100 percent."
University School tennis
Sweeping all seven flights and losing only one set all day, the Wildcats romped to the title in the Midwest Classic Conference Tournament on Saturday in Racine.
USM turned in a perfect score of 56 points as Prairie School finished second with 35 points and Kenosha St. Joseph's was third with 30.
Winning singles titles (flights one through four) were freshman Maddy Ecker, who went three sets to defeat Amanda Dick of St. Joseph's (7-6, 1-6, 6-4); Saira Khanna, Lucy Bartlett and Elena Noyes.
In doubles, the duo of Becca Buchanan and Riley Kelly, in just their second time working together, beat a Racine Prairie pair in two tiebreakers to win the first flight.
Other USM doubles champions included the pairs of Anne Scheid and Hannah Lubar and Shannon Cary and Ellie Wigdale.
Division 2 WIAA sub-sectional play will be held at Pleasant Valley Tennis Club in Jackson on Oct. 6.

Finding victories in Woodland Conference play has been a hit and miss affair for the Falcons this fall, but they succeeded in scoring their second invitational title of the season, when they outlasted University School to claim their own Brown Deer Invitational.
The Falcons turned in a 9-1 record in the six-school round-robin affair, as the Wildcats turned in an 8-2 mark. It was the highest finish in this tournament in a decade for the Wildcats. USM handed the Falcons their only loss with a 25-19, 26-27 split in the first match of the day. The Wildcats only other loss came in a split with Milwaukee Hamilton.
Highlighted players for USM included Kelly Brethauer, Sarah Lawton, Annalise Windsor, Lily Heun and Tori and Brittany Schmus.
Earlier in the week, the Falcons defeated Cudahy 25-13, 25-23, 25-10 in a Woodland dual as Monique Morris had 15 kills and three aces, Liz Seonbuchner 13 assists and five digs and Ariel Feiertag six blocks.

The Blue Dukes got an encouraging shot in the arm when they took second in their own invitational on Saturday.
"I thought we played some really good volleyball," said Blue Dukes coach Beth Haberli.. "We just didn't quite have the staying power to overtake Racine Case (to whom Bay lost twice on the day). ... Our senior leadership played a role in our ability to take second."
Bay finished second to Case in pool play, defeating Waukesha North and Milwaukee Messmer to advance to the championship semifinals. There they beat Waterford before falling to Case again by a 25-18, 25-18 score.
"Frankie Carroll had a great tournament," said Haberli. "Just about every time we set her she found a way to score. One of our biggest assets was our ability to make some great plays on defense."
Libero Meridith Ludwig, defensive specialist senior Hilary Stein, Sarah Weiss, captain Maggie Rice and Annika Gunderson were highlighted for their efforts.

Bouncing back after their only "off" race of the season, the Highlanders cruised to the championship in the speedy Muskego Invitational on Saturday.
"It was a good week, with some good practices," said Highlanders coach Victor Vilar. "We had been disappointed with what we did on a slower course the previous week (a second to host Bay at the Blue Dukes Kletzsch Park-based meet), so we all put in a good race this week."
The second-ranked-in-state Highlanders will challenge themselves on Saturday (12:30 p.m.) at the Madison Invitational, the University of Wisconsin version of the fabled Griak Invitational that was held last weekend. Many top teams from throughout the Midwest will be at the University Ridge Golf Course-based event.
In the Muskego meet, Homestead scored just 32 points as the host Warriors were a distant second in the 12-school field with 106.
All of Homestead's runners were in the top 16, all under 16 minutes. The team was led by Lauren Holtz, who covered the 4,000-meter Lake Denoon Middle School layout in 15 minutes, eight seconds, good for third. Also in the top 10 were Caity Bobber in fifth (15:30), Sarah Miller sixth (15:30), Kelsey Boyle in eighth (15:36) and Carrie Rice in 10th (15:47).
Also running were Keali Bjork in 13th (15:53) and Dana Griepentrog in 16th (15:59).

It was during early season practices at Concordia University that Blue Dukes coach Jim Tietjen began to suspect that his defense was going to be good this fall.
"I started to get on the offense because when our defense raised its level, our offense just couldn't score," he said. "We have awesome chemistry on that unit right now."
Especially after the Blue Dukes stifled Port Washington, 21-0, on Friday for their second shutout of the season to improve to 3-0 in North Shore play and 4-1 overall. Bay stayed tied with Homestead (3-0, 5-0) in league play and will now try to clinch another state playoff berth when it hosts Grafton (1-4) in its homecoming game at 7 p.m. Friday.
The Blue Dukes barely survived Grafton, 17-14, last season.
Bay stifled Port (2-3) right from the get-go. After Bay turned it over on a deep drive into Pirates territory in the second quarter the defense took matters into their own hands.
They overwhelmed the Port quarterback in the end zone for a safety and after the subsequent free kick, the offense found its groove as quarterback Cal Ehrke and end Paul Davis continue to make sweet music together connecting on a 35-yard touchdown reception to make it 9-0.
"After that score, we could settle into a rhythm," said Tietjen.
Port rarely got into Bay territory, and its deepest penetration was halted by a Jackson Weber interception. Davis finished with seven catches for 140 yards.
Ehrke added a quarterback sneak for a score in the third quarter and Justin Alt returned a pick 52 yards for the final touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Tietjen said that defensive back Gabe Aleman continued his season-long streak of fine play.
"He's a guy with savvy," said Tietjen. "He just gets it."

The Blue Dukes showed that they are a team to be taken seriously this fall when it took a strong second in the Arrowhead Invitational on Saturday.
"This team has made some enormous strides since the start of the season," said Blue Dukes coach Jake Nowak. "Our focus since our WIAA allowed 'contact days' this summer has been passing and serving, and I feel like we are finally solidifying those two areas.
"Their learning curve has just been so impressive that we may have to adjust our expectations a little bit," he said.
Bay went 4-1 in match play in the 12-school Arrowhead meet. It defeated Fond du Lac (19-25, 25-14, 18-16) in the quarterfinals and Waukesha North (25-15, 25-11) in the semifinals, before falling to the host Warhawks (26-24, 20-25, 15-11) in the final.
Chris Nichols (16 kills against Arrowhead), Charlie Sather (kill leader for the tournament), Aaron Rafeet ("breakout weekend" for the junior middle hitter), Mitch Pignotti (10 assists a game as setter) and Tommy Koehn (digs leader as libero) were praised for their efforts.

In a busy, but productive week, the Falcons claimed fifth in the Kenosha Bradford Invitational on Saturday after taking fourth in the Woodland Conference Relays on Sept. 23.
"We were thrilled to death at what we did in the relays," said Falcons co-coach Bob Van Lieshout. "We knew that we would finish anywhere from second to fifth and that Shorewood would win it, but we just had so many personal bests."
The Falcons scored 242 points for their spot in the relays as Shorewood won with 310.
Seconds went to the 200 free relay team of Caroline Bridges, Caroline Roos, Dani Gross and Nicole Hornslein (1:46.79); the 100 medley relay of Kevlyn, Jean Stathes, Kim Surfus and Kim Zwicke (1:00.57); the 300 butterfly crew of Hornslein, Roos, Surfus and Gross (3:12.11); the 500 crescendo relay of Zwicke, Hornslein, Bridges and Roos (5:08.17); the 400 free relay team of Bridges, Gross, Holmes, and Roos (SB 3:52.31); and the 100 freestyle unit of Bridges, Holmes, Gross and Hornslein (50.39).
Van Lieshout said the 400 free relay is already seven seconds ahead of its 2008 pace.
The Falcons scored 227 points at the Bradford Invitational as the host Red Devils won with 433. They were short-handed for the meet and again Van Lieshout highlighted many performances, especially those of divers Lauren Isnard (sixth), Emily Melvin (ninth) and Brooke Kwasny (10th) as they were performing in their first 11-dive event.
The trio combined to take third at the league relays.

David Radtke scored a goal in the 32nd minute with help from Dominic Uzzi as Brown Deer upset University School, 1-0, on Friday.
In doing so, the Falcons (8-10-1) ended the eight-game shutout streak of Wildcats goalie Andrew Stewart. Stewart has allowed only six goals all season for the 10-2-1 USM squad, which earlier in the week had routed Brookfield Academy, 8-0.
Brown Deer goalie Joey Mattefs made 11 saves against USM. The Falcons will visit Cudahy/St. Francis in a 4:30 p.m. game Monday.
North Shore Conference tennis
The powers that be in state tennis got one last tune-up last weekend before conference and sectional competition, when top-ranked and defending state champion Homestead won the Nicolet Invitational.
It was the fifth major tournament title for the unbeaten Highlanders. They defeated Whitefish Bay, 6-1, in the semifinals and downed Divine Savior Holy Angels, 7-0, in the title match. Nicolet, which had lost to DSHA, 4-3, in the semifinals, downed Bay, 6-1, in the third-place dual.
Nicolet and Bay, which are also ranked in the top five of state schools in Division I, will join Homestead in the North Shore Tournament at Whitefish Bay and Nicolet on Thursday and Friday. Competition both days starts at 3 p.m.
WIAA sub-sectional competition begins next week. Homestead will be at the Oconomowoc sub-sectional on Monday at 9 a.m., while Bay will host Nicolet and others in play to be held on Monday at 10 a.m.

Seventh place never sounds good to Blue Dukes girls coach Mike Miller, but he wanted his athletes to keep it in perspective as the defending state champions earned that spot in the 36-school Gold Division Griak Invitational race in Minnesota on Saturday.
"It was actually the same spot as last year," Miller said, "but that field is just crazy good. They have Division I level-ability (college runners) competing in that race. .. .but we ran well. We all moved up. I was really pleased with how we ran within ourselves."
"This was hard to wrap our heads around, but there were really good teams here from all over the Midwest, and we were without our number four (runner, Maddy Vicker)." The Blue Dukes scored 279 points as Dowling Catholic (Minn.) won with 106.
Running on the longer 5,000-meter course, the Blue Dukes were led by Emma Lisa Murphy in ninth (19:22), while Kenzie Vicker was 17th (19:42), Megan Palmer 31st (20:20), Arden Stewart in 109th (21:29) and Ally Spiroff in 113th (21:33).
Also running were Maureen Kahn (180th, 22:33) and Emma Fallone (182nd, 22:35).
The Bay boys got a pleasant surprise when the Blue Dukes won the small schools division of the Laser Relays at Nagawaukee Park on Saturday. They turned in a combined five-runner time of 90 minutes, five seconds to edge out Pius XI (90:09) in the eight-school division.
Mike Camilleri was fourth overall (16:49) while Stuart Gilreath was 33rd (18:06).
Brown Deer football
On paper, it was supposed to be a spirited football battle for supremacy in the Woodland Conference Blue Division.
In reality, it was over quickly.
Pewaukee's 43-7 Woodland Conference victory over Brown Deer pushed the Pirates to 5-0 overall, with a 4-0 standing in conference. The loss was the first of the season for the Falcons (4-1, 3-1).
Pewaukee's offense, driven by its staunch offensive line, moved the ball at will. The Pirates needed just eight plays for points after the opening kickoff, capped by an 8-yard touchdown run from Bryan Spakowicz. On its second possession of the night, Pewaukee had to go 95 yards for a score and had no trouble hitting pay dirt.Brown Deer head coach Rob Green knew coming in Pewaukee would be a handful for his club.
"They're an extremely talented team," Green said. "Up front, they're very physical, and we had a hard time with their physicality. They controlled the line of scrimmage all night long."
Pewaukee had two running backs with more than 100 yards rushing.
The Falcons' Chris Smith reached the end zone late in the game with a six yard run against Pewaukee's reserves.Pewaukee totaled nearly 500 yards on offense while holding the Falcons under 175 yards.
"We just need to go back to the drawing board, regroup and get ready for St. Francis," Green said. "We're doing OK. The kids had a heart-to-heart afterward and we liked the attitude that came out of it."
The Falcons will host the Mariners (1-4) in their annual homecoming game at 7 p.m. on Friday. St. Francis is coming off a 28-23 loss to St. Thomas More.

The loss dropped the Greyhounds to 6-1 in league duals and to 7-5 overall.
The Woodland Tournament will be Tuesday and Wednesday at Greendale and Greenfield.
