Bay honors community leader Phyllis Ernest

May 9, 2012

Whitefish Bay - People across the village paused this week to remember a longtime resident and her contributions to the community.

By proclamation of the Village Board, Tuesday was officially recognized as Mrs. Phyllis L. Ernest Day - a nod to a 55-year Whitefish Bay resident and her lengthy resume of service.

Ernest died April 9 at age 86.

"My mother truly loved the village, and she poured her heart and soul into maintaining and advancing the community's high standards and quality for many, many years," said Tom Ernest, one of Phyllis Ernest's six children.

Ernest's contributions included six year on the Whitefish Bay School Board, nine years on the Whitefish Bay Village Board and leadership roles as president of the Whitefish Bay Woman's Club and Whitefish Bay Civic Foundation.

She also was instrumental in a number of school-parent groups and chaired Renovation Committees for the Silver Spring Drive and Klode Park renovations in the 1980s.

In its proclamation, the board stated a desire to urge all residents to follow the model Ernest showcased throughout her time in the village.

Ernest's husband, Lawrence, preceded her in death in 2009.
