Politics in the United States have sunk so low that just about anyone who does not agree with one's strict adherence to some political straight-jacket is seen, not as a political adversary or opponent, but as an enemy. Sometimes the vitriol is so viscious that Americans treat fellow-Americans as outsiders, and call each other names like socialists, communists, fascists, Nazis, etc. While it has been escalating since the 1980s, it has become downright outrageous since the U.S. elected a president of mixed racial background who was and is quickly identified as black. In the U.S., one drop of African blood makes on black. And we cast prejudicial stones at people based on skin color and shade. Sad.
However, let's pause and look at the variance of comments that have been made about liberals and conservatives that carry a lighter aura and temperament. Methinks we need this.
"I can remember way back when a liberal was one who was generous with his own money." -Will Rogers
"Conservative, n. a statesman who is enamored of existing evils, as distinguished from the Liberal, who wishes to replace them with others." -Ambrose Bierce
"If a man is right he can't be too radical; if he is wrong, he can't be too conservative." -Josh Billings
"No man can cause more grief than that one clinging blindly to the vices of his ancestors." -William Faulkner
"The conservative who resists change is as valuable as the radical who proposes it." -Will and Ariel Durant
"We know what happens to people who stay in the middle of the road -- they get run over." -Aneurin Bevan
"The middle of the road is all of the usable surface. The extremes, right and left, are in the gutters." -Dwight D. Eisenhower
"Though I believe in liberalism, I find it difficult to believe in liberals." -G.K. Chesterton
"Liberal -- a power worshipper without the power." -George Orwell
"One learns in life to remain silent and draw one's own confusions." -Cornelia Otis Skinner
"As I grow to understand life less and less, I learn to live it more and more." -Jules Renard
"The longer I live, the more beautiful life becomes." -Frank Lloyd Wright
"We all live under the same sky, but we don't all have the same horizon." -Konrad Adenauer
Yes, Mr. Schultz, we need to lighten up. Let's see how long it takes for the ideologues to find criticism for this attempt of yours to bring sanity, objectivity AND A LITTLE HUMOR to the blog marketplace.
I reflect back at times and say “when did all of this anger in politics start?” and I always come back to Bill Clinton. Has there ever been a more evil group of people to run a Presidential campaign than: James Carville, Paul Begala, Mandy Grunwald, Bob Boorstin, Stan Greenberg, Mickey Kantor, Harold Ickes? I remember they proudly called their meetings the “War Room”. That collective group parasite had one goal and that was to destroy reputations of their political advisories. The Republicans did not start this but rest assured we will finish it. You wanted war, you got it.
Cute list, I agree both sides are too busy in their own job security, and 'team protection' that I think they aren't truly acting in their constituents best interests.
My personal favorite of the quotes above is probably Eisenhower's.
OK, that just about wraps it up. There is no way to deal in conciliatory terms with today's Americans. But we can choose to ignore brachium's ill-advised comments, and continue with some hope. He does not represent America.
Right on brachium! The left forgets the past. They also seem to forget that Bush was called a Nazi numerous times. Oh well, Schultz is right about the vitriol on both sides. I would assume that Tom and Kathy would agree but who knows? And oh yes, their agenda is to continue to destroy reputations. Does Sarah Palin ring a bell? BD conservative, I wouldn't call myself a conservative because the vitriol that will be upcoming against you will be unending, no matter how much truth you present.
It is so nice to simply request that you read what is written by brach-bd-Gordy. Simply read their words.
They are right, during Bush's reign there were tons of lies and distortions...mostly by Bush against John McCain in the South Carolina primary. But we can rise about that characterization and focus on the hopeful words of Mr. Schultz in this blog.
Yes, at least Schultz offered balance and he was wise enough to choose the words of other folks. And Tom, aren't you aware of how politicians ALL say what people want to hear and yes, those little lies are interjected. I'm sure you are aware of the litany of those said lies have put this administration and Congress into power. Thus far, they are batting ZERO on the great promises and "The chickens are coming home to roost."-Jermiah Wright. I might add, you had best start saving up for your childrens childrens future as Mr. O has just submitted a $3.8 trillion budget. And yes, Cap and Trade is included even though it is all a hoax, which the IPCC leader is FINALLY admitting error. Al Gore's PEER review is going up in smoke but who cares, he has already made billions on his false theories.
Give it a rest, Gordy. Nothing tops Bush's lies that caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Iraqi citizens, thousands of Americans, and deprived the Iraqis of clean water, electricity, and the essentials of life. They now face a splintered nation that is about to go up in flames. Or isn't 54 dead in one incident in Baghdad yesterday enough? The slaughter that is coming in Iraq will be at the feet of George W. Bush. Stop the posturing, Gordy. Read this blog and try, just try, to capture a glimpse into intelligent commentary, not more lies and deceptions by you...why don't you acknowledge what the readers here all know about you already: you are an uninformed, lover of greed, haven't got a clue about altruism, want the established ally government of Yemen to fall to the terrorists, and on and on and on. All people have to do is read what you have ALREADY written here. Thank you again, Mr. Schultz, for the sanity you bring to this site. It is sorely needed ...obviously.
Bush, our military hero, tried to destroy the reputation of two of America's surviving heroes: John Kerry and John McCain.
You have some friends and idols, Gordy.
The "we" casting the prejudicial stones is your progressive ilk.
Does your memory go back far enough to recall Joe Biden and Harry Reid's statements about POTUS?
Or perhaps, your recollection is just convenient and selective.
Your leaders are just that...Sad.
And which intelligent commentary are you referring to? Most certainly not yours because you once again only deligitamize your comments by your comment of my love for greed? You are less observant than I could ever envision you to be. Sadly, nothing seems to stick with you and I know it is hopeless. Explain the lies please. You know you can't so you just continue your ridiculing. And that after Lester says to lighten up. Shame on you! Could it possibly be that our troops pulled out of Iraq too soon? I don't think so but if that is the case, who would you blame for that? Bush? No doubt, these people will suffer great hardships before they are stable but at least they have a fighting chance. I am waiting for you to start demonizing Obama for sending more troops to Afghanistan where those people are also dying. I know you probably won't because he can do no wrong. Or is it he can do no right? As an Independent, I just want him and all of the politicians to quit trying to preserve their jobs and do what is right. Maybe we should become an isolationist country once again. We all know how that worked out in history. The only thing Kerry did that was inspirational was get in bed with the Ketchup king and then he proceeded to lie about his war wounds and heroism which was and still is widely disputed. Maybe you didn't follow that story as closely as you should have. I would still salute him as a veteran, which I do FOR ALL VETS. Not exactly un-American as you so ignorantly describe me.
Good readers, just go back and read the things that were written in prior comments in this blog. All we ask you to do is read what Gordy, F. Man., and the other right-wingers and Gordy aliases have written. No more, just read what they wrote. All the rest of their commentary here is to attack anyone to the left of Adolf Hitler.
Evidently, it would be useful for some people to read Mr. Schultz's post again and take it to heart! "Lighten up!" Vitriolic reaction is a tempting low road to travel, but it doesn't help us get where we need to go. People should try to comment on the blog posts rather than continue the ongoing gutter fight between each other. That doesn't seem to be going anywhere good. Sure, the other side is "stupid, a liar, a nazi, an idiot...". If you find you must respond to another commentator, try to hold on to the slim hope that there is an educable brain cell in there somewhere and speak to that. Personally, I find that to be difficult sometimes but in the spirit of Mr. Schultz's post I think we should all try.
Amen, to libi's comments above. Hallelujah!
Correct libi. I only hope that the likes of Tom, Kathy and Frank can adhere to that advice. Their only commitment to the blog is ridicule and scorn of someone who disagrees with them. No matter WHAT the truth is. Sad, sad, sad!
Whoa, Gordono! Scroll up to the comments above. There were some nice, positive comments about objectivity and fairness of this blog entry. Lo and behold, who comes along to introduce the negativity?
Brachnium, a right-winger. And then Gordo, you jumped in to agree with him. YOU, Gordonno, are the one who always brings your Neanderthal and draconian rants here. Others respond. But this is a wonderful blog that always finds you hiding behind some tree waiting to pounce with your trashy comments. The negativity is YOURS, and initiated by YOU. And if readers will go back and look at the trash you posted here in the past, they will find a real sinister and ignorant man [if I can call you that].
You may call me anything you want. I take no pain in it as I know that your viewpoints are indicative of your one sided view and close mindedness of every issue. I must admit, I enjoy reading what you write as it exemplifies what the left is all about. You seem to forget that I am an Independent and actually DO follow both sides and prefer the one that is more on the American side. Don't forget to go to your caucus tonite. The Democrat leadership will need more spewers of hatred to survive in 2010. Even that may not be enough for them to survive. Aren't Neanderthal and draconian a little over your vocabulary head? I am just curious. Are you a farmer in the corn business? I admire you if you are as I love farmers. However, thanks to the idiot environmentalists, one fourth of the 2009 corn crop went into ethenol while 1 BILLION people are starving. At least Mr. O has finally opened his eyes and is revisiting nuclear energy production. You see, in time, even the least among us see the light.
Gordy, it is spelled "ethanol." About the red-faced lies you use and were called on just in this blog, you say nothing.
You sure do like to avoid things that show you for what you are...and what you are I leave to the readers here.
