Trustee Meeting 12/21 - City Market
The Whitefish Bay Trustees had their regular meeting tonight, 12/21.
We quickly took care of some bond issue business .. then at the end of the meeting we voted on an item that I get the most emails on .. a topic I can rarely open my inbox without reading a question concerning the status of: CITY MARKET.
The Trustees voted, 7-0 to approve a TID financing agreement for City Market. Previously, the BID and CDA had voted to approve City Market's application for a Retail Incentive Program grant.
I won't speak out of turn with other details, but suffice it to say, the tea leaves look good for City Market opening in Whitefish Bay.

I just wonder whether this is advisable given that the proposed location is the old Mike Crivello's. On the opposite side you have Bruegger's and Stone Creek, two long time and stable tenants. I'd be worried that this increased competition would be detrimental to those two businesses, and that it would be an unfair fight given that a TID backs City Market.
Just a few thoughts. Happy Holidays.
I think it's a wonderful idea and just the sort of thing the area needs. I'd argue that City Market will bring more foot traffic and more potential business to the retailers and other restaurants in the area increasing the bottom line for everyone.
More restaurants = more options in the neighoborhood. More options = more reason to come back more frequently.
Speaking of Bruegger's and Stone Creek. Kevin, is there anyway we can prevent the Kemp's milk trucks from parking on the East and West sides of Hollywood Street to unload product and take orders? One of these trucks takes up two parking spaces. I come to Bruegger's every morning before work, Hollywood Street is like a drive up window for Bruegger's and at least three times a week there is a Kemp's guy unloading supplies. I've talked with the Manager of Bruegger's he told me it's Stone Creek's delivery truck and seeing how they share a common backdoor entrance the Bruegger's Manager does not want the delivery guy walking through his store into Stone Creek.
You would think the Bruegger's Manager would want people to have easy parking for his store but he is stubborn, it's like the Hatfields & McCoys between those two businesses. Can we have some 'No Loading or Un-Loading' signs made up? placed from the alley North to Silver Spring? The delivery trucks need to use the alley behind the store it makes perfect sense and the Manager of Bruegger's needs to get on board with this.
@Andrew - That did come up, naturally. A couple things .. first, a member of the BID (who voted yes on the grant) also owns a bakery on SS. Obviously, he didn't feel threatened. -- But I would also contend that .. there are about 10,000 people within 1 mile of City Market/Bruegger's .. I think the market is big enough to support both .. -- and while their market overlaps, it's not perfect. I guess I think of Bruegger's as a bagel place, more for morning traffic. CM will take some of that, yeah, but it's more of a lunch/sandwich place. (At least, that's how I use CM in Shorewood.)
There are plenty of examples of overlapping businesses existing. Somehow, Oakcrest, Harry's, VPub, and two Chinese spots operate in Shorewood, within a mile of eachother.
CM and the rest will do just fine.
@Ares - I've asked the Chief to look into the issue. I'll post any results in this thread.
