OBAMA ELECTION UNLEASHES AMERICAN BIGOTS
"Cross burnings. Children on a school bus in Idaho reportedly chanting 'Assasinate Obama.' Black figures hung from nooses. Racial ephithets scrawled on homes and cars. Incidents around the country referring to President-elect Barack Obama are dampening the postelection glow of racial progress and harmony, highlighting the stubborn racism that remains in America."
William Ferris of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill commented: "It's shaking the foundations on which the country has existed for centuries. Someone once said racism is like cancer. It's never totally wiped out; its' in remission." -above from Associated Press reports in Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Nov. 16, 2008, page 8A
A West Allis fireman admitted using a racial slur in public when Obama was elected, and a Milwaukee police station had a bullet on an Obama photo.
"A prejudiced person will almost certainly claim that he has sufficient warrant for his views." -Gordon W. Allport
"The chief cause of human errors is to be found in the prejudices picked up in childhood." -Rene Descartes
"Loyalty to a petrified opinion never yet broke a chain or freed a human soul." -Mark Twain
"Mothers of prejudiced children, far more often than mothers of unprejudiced children, held that obedience is the most important thing a child can learn." -Gordon Wl Allport
"The trouble with being tolerant is that people think you don't understand the problem." -Merle L. Meacham
Who, pray tell, is playing the race card? In an honest attempt to try and get passed this horrible embarrassment, allow me to ask: what can we do about this debilitating, ongoing bigotry that has hold of the United States?
